Breathing Apparatus For Diving: Types Of Apparatus

Breathing Apparatus For Diving: Types Of Apparatus

Most of the time, divers talk about the importance of breathing apparatus for diving but not about apparatus types. For new divers who are not experienced with any gears, it becomes overwhelming as they don’t understand which one they should buy. In most cases, the safety advisor tells the divers to consider having a BA. It leaves people to wonder what type of breathing apparatus for diving they will need.

Firstly, we have to understand why we will need a breathing apparatus? The BA or supplied air come into rescue, where the powered air-filter system or filter mask is not suitable. However, some other types of things are also involved. So, let’s learn about various breathing apparatuses that you should consider:

Escape

With this Escape breathing apparatus, one can self-rescue oneself from a hazardous situation. The Escape apparatus is for the confined space where one wouldn’t face any immediate crisis from oxygen or gas deficiency. Still, in these areas, the risk remains. Therefore, an Escape BA set enables the user to rescue himself/herself from impending danger.

An Escape Apparatus has a compressed air cylinder which is either 2.0 or 3.0L in size. It feeds the air into the facepiece. You will get either loose-fitting hood or else positive pressure close-fitting face mask. Those who frequently use full face masks, mostly prefer the close-fitting face mask for its familiarity and comfort. When a user is irregular, they will prefer the loose-fitting hood in an emergency situation. With loose-fitting hood, you can accommodate the facial hair and glass well.

Breathing Apparatus For Diving: Self-Contained Apparatus For Breathing Underwater

When you are entering a known hazardous environment, you will need a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). One of the recognized users of these apparatus is the Fire Services. They use the SCBA to enter areas where they have to encounter harmful gases and smoke. Apart from fire services, there are other areas where people have to deal with toxic gases or as they face a deficiency of oxygen. During scuba diving, this type of breathing apparatus is useful.

An SCBA set has these three components: a back-plate, a cylinder, and a face mask. The back-plate reduces high air-pressure to medium pressure and also holds the cylinder. With SCBA, divers freely roam around underwater. However, the gear has a disadvantage as the cylinder has a short supply time. Also, the cylinder can be a hindrance because of the increased size.

Airline Breathing Apparatus

The users don’t receive normal air with Airline Breathing Apparatus. Instead, the users are fed EN12021 standard compressed air through the airline. This apparatus contains a compressed air source. So, it would deliver air that has gone through air quality tests and of EN12021 standard. The Apparatus passes the air to face mask via the airline harness. An airline system mostly incorporates an escape cylinder that the user wears. So, if the main air supply fails, the users can still have a short-duration of air supply for self-rescuing themselves. In a localized area where the work is for a longer period, airline systems are best. When a user is attached to an Airline Breathing Apparatus, he can work for a longer time with comfort. But it restricts the ease of movement, so there’s a risk of entangling.
