How To Do That “Perfect” Swimming Dive

Swimming is the act of moving oneself through water by using arms and legs in a coordinated manner. We even have records of people swimming in paintings from 7000 years ago. Hence, we can say that people have been swimming since ancient times. As of today, swimming dive has acquired the form of a competitive sport. It consists of timed laps, races, and dives.

Moreover, competitive swimming is one of the most famous Olympic sports. The swimming dive is a type of swimming in which a person jumps off a high block into a swimming pool. Also, the dive start is the time duration between jumping to when the swimmer’s head is 15m below the water. So, let’s know in detail how swimmers perform these dives.

Swimming Dive Start

A swimming start is the same as a dive start, which we mentioned earlier. However, to do a swim start properly, we need to break it down into three simple steps:

  • On-plank: It refers to the time between the start signal and when the swimmer’s toes leave the plank/block.
  • Flight Phase: In this phase, the swimmer is airborne after leaving the block. Consequently, this phase measures the time from when the swimmer leaves the block to when he touches the water.
  • Underwater Phase: This phase refers to the time a swimmer spends underwater after diving. Also, it accounts for 95% of the time in a dive. Moreover, this phase is the most crucial for determining the overall efficiency of the swimming dive.

Diving Positions

You must have seen divers doing different types of dives in the water. After you perfect your skills to dive, you can choose from four different body positions. They are:

  • Straight: The body remains in a straight line throughout the jump.
  • Tuck: The swimmer holds his knees in his arms and goes into a “tucking” position. Moreover, then he performs a swimming dive.
  • Pike: The swimmer bends the body and holds it at the hips. However, the knees remain straight.
  • Free: Most people use the free dive position when they want to either twist or somersault in the air before touchdown. Therefore, we can say that a free dive is a combination of all the techniques mentioned above.

In competitive swimming, however, the events may be based on certain diving positions. Therefore, you should learn to do all of them if you want to stand a chance to win.

Making The Swimming Dive

Many people think that the faster their take-off speed, the better will be their swimming dive. However, this is not true. To make the perfect dive, you also need to maintain your velocity underwater. Therefore, we can even say that the fastest dive starts are those that keep the highest speed after entering the water. Therefore, to maintain velocity underwater, you should:

  • Travel at least 0.5 meters under the water.
  • Use the momentum of your dive to glide through the water for two seconds.
  • Maintain a streamlined body shape.
  • When you reach 6 meters, start with the dolphin kick.
  • Keep the upper body straight and use only the legs and feet to move forward.
