The air we breathe usually contains only 21 percentage of oxygen as it is the critical component that keeps you alive. However, breathing 100 percent oxygen in the air, you breathe may not be great for you. Moreover, it may be very harmful to your health. Studies show that breath with 100 percent oxygen is usually bad for your body, and at times, it may be very toxic. It is essential to understand why 100 percent O2 may not be excellent for your body.

Lungs are the series of long tubes that start from the mouth and nose. These tubes will end in small air sacs with fragile walls. These walls are known as alveoli. Alveoli is very similar to the soap bubbles that you can find at the tip of the straw. Around the alveolus, there are blood vessels with thin and small walls, and they are known as pulmonary capillaries. A thin wall is present in the middle of alveolus and capillaries, and it is the path for different gases like nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and oxygen.

While inhaling, alveoli is full with the air. Oxygen concentration is more in alveoli than what is present in the blood. It makes oxygen to enter the blood from alveoli. The carbon dioxide is more in the blood than in alveoli, and so it enters alveoli from the blood. The gas exchange makes the alveoli fill with air that has more carbon dioxide in it. When you are exhaling, you are breathing out air that is high in carbon dioxide and low in oxygen.

When you make guinea pigs breathe air that has 100 percent at the standard pressure for about 48 hours, it leads to fluid accumulation in the epithelial cell lining of alveoli and lungs. Moreover, it can even damage the pulmonary capillaries. The destruction of the pulmonary capillaries is due to the formation of O2 free radicals, which is a form of very highly reactive oxygen. They can destroy the membranes and proteins present in epithelial cells. 

When humans breathe air with 100 percent O2 at the normal pressure, it can accumulate fluid in the lungs, it also gradually slows down the gas flow through alveoli. Moreover, you may need to breathe more to get enough oxygen for your body. Deep and stressful breathing continuously can result in chest pain. It can also reduce the amount of exchangeable air in the lungs by seventeen percent.

Atelectasis

Alveoli may collapse as there will not be any gas left in it as most of it is gets absorbed into the blood. This process is known as atelectasis, and it is normal, and you can clear it just by coughing. There are also proofs of 100 percent oxygen consumption by astronauts in the Apollo and Gemini programs at low pressure. However, 100 percent oxygen intake with very high pressure may lead to oxygen poisoning. There may be symptoms like dizziness, blur visions, nausea, seizures, and muscle twitches. The high oxygen pressures experience is among scuba divers in the military and the patients who go through acute carbon monoxide poisoning. They should be under careful monitoring throughout the treatment.
